Karl J. Jacobs Center for Science and Math

Rockford, IL

The Karl J. Jacobs Center for Science and Math was completed in 2011 and is a state-of-the-art teaching facility containing 10 labs, 15 classrooms, and various support spaces.  The 106,000 SF, $24 Million facility is LEED Gold Certifies.

 

Some of the key sustainable and energy saving features are as follows:

  • Native plantings and rain gardens

  • Preferred parking for LEV vehicles

  • White and green roofs

  • 30% reduction in water usage

  • Geothermal system provides 100% of the heating and cooling load

  • Chilled Beam units

  • Photo Voltaic and Micro-Hydro power generation demonstration systems

  • 50% of electricity is “Green” power

  • Building used 44% less energy than base building
